20. In-Season Soil Sampling

There are all sorts of data to collect from agricultural field plots during the growing season.

The NCRS is conducting an experiment on in-furrow fertilizers and how long they last.  This involves taking soil samples from in the seed row where the fertilizer was placed at planting.  A core is taken from in the row and only the top four inches is taken for lab analysis.  The use of a hinged soil probe works well for this by being able to accurately collect the right depth.  Having all samples from the same depth will increase accuracy of measurement.  Fortunately, we have Carolina and Natalie, two hard-working college interns, helping with the collection.
